Zanzibar records decline in cholera cases

ZANZIBAR has recorded a decline in cholera cases aid to support the fight against epidemic continues to flow.

The Director of the Department of Prevention in the Ministry of Health, Dr Mohamed Dahoma, and the Unguja Medical Superintendent Dr Fadhil Mohamed, spoke of noticeable success in eradicating the disease.

“We were receiving between 40 to 60 patients daily, but this week we received between 5 and 20 patients. This is an achievement for us. Let’s devote our energies into fighting the epidemic,” said Dr Fadhil.

He said on Wednesday that the Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC) at Chumbuni received only 12 patients while in other centres had five patients or none.

He attributed the decline to multiple interventions which include awareness to observe health regulations. Both Dr Dahoma and the Minister of Health Mahmoud Thabit Kombo said the success recorded should not make people relax in the battle against the disease.

The mobile phone company, ZANTEL, through its director Mohamed Khamis Mussa donated various items worth over 11m/- to help surveillance activities.

Apart from ZANTEL’s donation, the ZTE, a Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and systems company, handed over items worth 42m/- to Zanzibar First Lady Mwanamwema Shein at the State House towards the battle against the disease.

Meanwhile, the Office of Chief Government Statistician revealed here yesterday that the rate of inflation increased last month following a decline in the previous month. Unveiling the monthly ‘Consumer Price Index (CPI)’ to the media here, the head of the statistics unit, Khamis Ahmada Shauri, said inflation increased from 9.7 percent in March to 10.1 per cent last month.

“Food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation rate increased to 14.4 percent in April from 11.3 percent recorded in March; non-food inflation decreased to 5.1 percent in April compared to 7.2 percent recorded in March,” he said.

He said that the overall index increased to 121.4 in April from 110.3 recorded in April, 2015. Shauri said that food and non-alcoholic beverages group increased to 14.4 percent. About 269 commodities are monitored monthly by OCGS-Zanzibar to have the CPI.

A short statement on his Facebook fanpage announced:

"Pancake started developing penile cancer because he always taped them up for photoshoots, and sometimes left them like that overnight."

Fans have been asked to donate cash to help with his hospital treatment.

Woman, 101 yrs old Gives Birth After Ovary Transplant

In Napoli, Italy, Anatolia Vertadella, a 101-year-old woman, has given birth to a nine-pound baby, named Francesco, after a controversial ovary transplant widely criticized.

This 26-year-old man is a Catholic and that is all that is important to me. “I wanted my child to be born in a union sanctified by the Catholic Church. I know we are not married and that he will not play a part in Francesco’s life, but I have written to the pope to ask his absolution. I have also named my child after the pope in his honor and so I believe he should find a place in his heart to forgive me in this particular situation. I still love my deceased husband and desire to stay a widow until I leave this earth, but I needed the seed of this young fervent Catholic to fulfill God’s will,” she explained.

Referral hospital fails to heed minister’s order

Mbeya Referral Hospital has failed to heed the Deputy Minister’s ultimatum of purchasing a CT-scan machine within 60 days.

Deputy Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Children and Elderly Dr Khamis Kigwangala’s In February made an impromptu visit to the hospital, and spoke to workers, who informed him that the facility has never had a CT-Scan machine since its establishment.

They also told him that other machines sent there by the government were not working because there were no qualified technicians to operate them. The hospital serves six regions in the southern highlands.

Dr Kigwangala said it was inconceivable to see such a major hospital operating without a CT-Scan machine while it collects Sh500mil per month through its internal earnings.

He said since the hospital was a member of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), its leadership could have taken a loan to buy the machine.

“How can a private hospital manage to buy a CT-Scan machine and not a referral hospital like yours which collects Sh500 million per month? You have the NHIF access from which you can take a loan to buy the apparatus,” Dr Kigwangala advised.

Speaking to The Citizen team yesterday, the hospital executive director Dr Godlove Mbwanji, said although the hospital earned praise for collecting more than Sh500mil per month, its operational costs were higher than what it could have been imagined.
